Uncensored Playboy on the iPad?
Hello iPhone user, if you're an Apple device user you'll already know that the App Store is limited for apps with adult content (although such content is primarily available to all ages on the web). This restriction, imposed by Steve Jobs under the motto "Freedom from porn," could come to an end in March when the official version of Playboy for the iPad is released, according to Hugh Hefner, CEO of Playboy.
There are two things to say about this: good news and bad news. The good news is that it's true, it will be uncensored. The bad news is that it will only be a web app. If you don't know, a web app is an adaptation of a website to be viewed better on the iPad, as newspapers like the Times in the United States have done. The drawback of a web app is that you can't access the content if you're not connected to Wi-Fi or 3G, and access to the web app is not free.
In some statements made by Steve Jobs some time ago, he emphasized, in reference to the iPad and pornography, to a Gawker reporter:
Regarding the iPad: "Yes, free from programs that steal your private information, free from programs that damage your battery. Free from pornography. Yes... free. Times have changed, and some traditional PC users feel their world is fading away, and they're right."
Well, regardless of any double standards we might have regarding pornography, I think that beyond a porn-free device, what we really want is a free device, simply FREE. Free from Flash content, free to use Bluetooth with other devices, free to have whatever applications we like, whether they're for pornography, games, videos, or music—free in every sense of the word, free from all the false exclusivity that we Mac users, or Apple users in general, always boast about, but which ultimately limits us in one way or another.
We're not talking about the advantage of a Mac over a PC, because that battle, despite the vast majority of PC users around the world, has always been won by Macs. If you don't believe it, look for users who have switched from PC to Mac, and chances are they haven't gone back. Nor are we talking about the vulnerabilities of Microsoft software or its lack of practicality. Let's talk about our portable devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), which both Apple and Windows users have access to. We have something in common: we want them to be free.
Well, it seems this WebApp will allow access to content from previous editions in a much more user-friendly interface than the website; however, it will have a price. Many were already excited about the idea of the Playboy App, but it seems that if this were to happen, it would be under the same "no pornography" rules as Apple.
