What is ECID?

Hello iPhone users, many of you, like myself, didn't know or don't know what ECID is or what it's for. Well, here's some information so you know: Since the release of the third-generation iPhone and iPod Touch, Apple introduced a new signature system so that when the company released new firmware, the average user was forced to install the latest, and only the latest, version available, without being able to revert to previous versions (a process known as "downgrading")...

ECID stands for "Exclusive Chip ID," which is simply a chip that uniquely identifies each iPhone 3GS or third-generation iPod Touch. It functions like a document number, where each individual has a unique identification number, or like license plates on cars, where each vehicle has its own unique plate. Apple uses this ECID in such a way that every time we use iTunes to update or restore our device, a unique certificate is generated for our phone, authorizing or denying the update or restore. (That's why, if we try to restore our device to a version older than the latest one released by Apple, the generated certificate will prevent the process.)

The creation of the ECID SHSH is simply a new security measure by Apple to reduce the possibility of more users jailbreaking their device.

So to save your ECID from Cydia, press where it says:

“Make my life easier, thanks!”

And they'll have the security of being able to downgrade!
