Apple is preparing a SIM-free iPhone for September 2022

Earlier this week, a rumor circulated that the iPhone 15 Pro models might not have a physical SIM card slot in some countries and regions. However, this change could happen sooner than expected.

Apple is expected to have warned major US carriers to prepare for the launch of eSIM smartphones, starting in September 2022.

The rumor was called into question when an apparently legitimate document was shared, outlining the timeline for this initiative. It's worth noting that this document doesn't specifically mention Apple or the iPhone.

As part of the transition, it is described that some US carriers will supposedly begin offering certain iPhone 13 models without a nano-SIM card by the second quarter of 2022.

iPhone 13 models sold through the Apple Store or Apple.com no longer include a nano-SIM card in the box. Users typically activate a mobile plan via eSIM by turning on the iPhone or connecting to a Wi-Fi network and following the on-screen instructions.

Given the rumored September 2022 deadline, it's possible Apple will remove the physical SIM card slot, starting with some iPhone 14 models. But we emphasize once again, nothing is definitive at this time.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows users to activate a cellular plan without using a nano-SIM card. It's important to note that eSIM service isn't available in all countries, so iPhones with a SIM card slot may still be available in some markets.

However, adoption is expanding rapidly, with over 100 operators offering eSIM service worldwide. They also plan to roll out support in countries like the UK (with Three) and New Zealand (with Vodafone) in the future.

The iPhone 13 models already support multiple eSIM profiles, allowing users to subscribe to several mobile phone plans digitally. It is perhaps this functionality that could pave the way for the elimination of the physical SIM card slot in certain countries.
