Apple wants $40 USD for each Samsung phone
Apple has been fighting a long battle for some time to protect its patents and seek fair competition, now it wants to punish Samsung for using features it has patented for the iPhone.
This is not something new or novel, as we have published some examples of this before; he has done it before with other patents and won the battle in court, but this time it is not enough for him to win, he wants to punish Samsung for using his intellectual property.
Apple has filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the US for the use of 5 patents belonging to the Cupertino-based company:
- Phone number location
- Unified Search
- Data synchronization
- Slide to unlock
- Autocomplete
When a company creates a patent, in theory it owns the knowledge or technology it has created, and other companies cannot use it. However, in practice, especially in technology, companies copy what their competitors do. If a company like Apple decides to use its resources to file a lawsuit and wins, it will be financially compensated for the patent's use. This would mean Samsung paying Apple more money for it, as already happened in the US in the previous lawsuit. Another possibility is that the courts could prohibit the company that copied the patents from selling its devices, which would have a significant impact on the company. This didn't happen in Samsung's case, which is why Apple is now demanding so much for these five patents.
The outcome of the previous lawsuit awarded Apple just under $8 USD for three patents, so it's hard to understand why they're now asking for $40 for five patents. The explanation might be that, since Apple can't prevent Samsung from selling its devices in the US , it's trying to capture the lion's share of the profits so that the company decides to "voluntarily" withdraw them.
