Apple will remove optical drives from iMac and Mac Pro

Notes from the upcoming OS X Mountain Lion update confirm that Apple is preparing to launch new models of compact iMacs (iMac13,0) and Mac Pro desktop computers (MacPro6,0) with one notable change: the disappearance of optical drives.

 

Apple would continue the strategy of completely eliminating any type of optical drive from all its computers , a strategy initiated in the MacBook Air and continued in the MacBook Pro Retina.

Apple aims to promote the use of streaming with iTunes, its Apple TV, and now with the iCloud cloud to complete the job, offering external optical drives for those who need them but eliminating its internal installation on Mac computers.
