Google wants to prevent malware by hosting plugins in the Chrome Web Store for Mac.

A year ago, Google began implementing a security policy and measure for Windows computers requiring that Chrome browser extensions be hosted in the browser's own Web Store . This was done to prevent the distribution of malware , which typically starts when users download third-party extensions or applications that are not reviewed by the company.

But this is a common occurrence, also seen in mobile app stores, and is the primary reason for infections spreading online. Google had already conducted some security tests, and this decision will help users avoid malware that installs unwanted browser add-ons and exposes their private information.

The company hadn't started enforcing this policy for Windows developer channel users until now . So, while Mac developers will still be able to install extensions without going to the Web Store , they too will have to comply with the same conditions starting in July of this year.

While it is true that OS X users are rarely victims of attacks other than malware , this measure will prevent forced ads, page redirects , the recording of user browsing activity, or any other unusual activity from appearing in Chrome.

Google recommends that developers who do not yet have their extensions in the Chrome Web Store can submit them via this method.
