SHSH… What is it, what is it for?
Hello iDevice users, considering that many haven't updated their iDevice to Firmware 4.2.1, perhaps waiting for that magical Untethered jailbreak or that definitive unlock we so desperately crave, it seems like a good time to refresh our memories about the SHSH blobs that Apple generates for our iDevices, and why it's crucially important that we save these certificates.
- What is an SHSH?
A SHSH is a company Secure, basically like a unique seal that Apple generates for our iOS devices, so that once restored to a new version, you can never downgrade, or for those who don't know this term, it's restoring our iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to a previous firmware.
- Why do I need SHSHs?
Because Apple only allows you to restore to firmwares that they sign, and whose signing period only lasts for a limited time, which means that when that window closes, you can no longer restore to that firmware. never more.
These two basic questions help us understand the clear need for SHSH.
Let's take an example: "Juan" bought an iPhone 4 right when Apple put it on the market, but he didn't jailbreak it because he knows that many of his favorite apps and tweaks are not compatible with the iOS 4.0 that came with his iDevice, so he's going to wait a while for all the compatibility issues to disappear and thus avoid any problems with his jailbreak.
Sounds good, right? The problem arises when Juan lets Apple release the firmware for iOS 4.0.1 and closes the signing window for the iOS 4.0 that Juan had, which now makes it impossible for him to jailbreak his iPhone, unless he updates to the latest version for which there is surely still a jailbreak available.
This is where SHSH blobs come in. If Juan had saved his SHSH blobs, this whole problem would have been avoided. But how can we save our SHSH blobs?
He downloaded the TinyUmbrella program, which would have allowed him to save Apple's "signature" on his computer and would have allowed him to restore his iDevice.
