Spotify may end its free service, influenced by Apple?
Apple's upcoming launch in the music and streaming services market is causing quite a stir, especially since some companies like Spotify accuse it of influencing record labels to abandon free services like YouTube streaming or Spotify itself . Now it seems that all this has had an effect, as the streaming leader may be ending its free service.
Digital Music News has published an interesting article confirming that Spotify has received requests and a lot of pressure from the music industry to stop offering its free plan and limit itself to offering only 3 months of free streaming.
Basically, this would be the same model that Apple wants to bring to the market to attract customers; however, Rdio has not wanted to be left behind in the streaming war and for that reason has launched Rdio Select , a service at half the price of the average competitor but with its limitations.
Only new Spotify users would be fully affected by this new 90-day free period; however, current users will have to continue their plans for the next 6 months.
Universal Music Group and Sony are believed to be among the strongest companies behind this proposal for Spotify, even though the former is also the one that suggested opening the investigation that the European Commission is carrying out to determine the unfair competition that Apple could be engaging in.
