The Dev-Team 's official blog has published a very important and interesting post about the iOS 5.1 jailbreak and its progress. They discuss the potential jailbreak of the new iPad 3 and also mention the userland jailbreak , which is done via software. This will work for all devices running iOS 5.1, including the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.
