DFU mode is a failsafe system found on all Apple mobile devices. It allows you to restore your device if it malfunctions. Previously, jailbreak developers used this method to insert the code that enabled jailbreaking, but it no longer works with newer devices (it no longer works for jailbreaking starting with the iPhone 4s).
Note: If you want to repair your device by putting it into DFU mode and restoring with iTunes, it will update to the latest iOS. If you have an iPhone 4s or newer, there's nothing you can do to prevent this. If you have an iPhone 4 or earlier, you can restore to the same version or downgrade to an older version only if you have the SHSH blobs. Note: If you want to exit DFU mode, all you have to do is press the Home+Sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo.
