Hey iPhone users, I know there are many experts here at iPhoneate who know all the tricks, but this tutorial is for the thousands of new users who come across iPhoneate. This is a pretty easy process, but it still takes some practice to put your iPhone/iPod/iPad into this mode. This mode helps us…

  • When our device is not responding.
  • If it's stuck on the apple.
  • If it is restarting every so often.
  • If some tweak doesn't let us use it properly.
  • To restore.
  • In some cases to jailbreak (if your device is jailbroken using this method).
  • You can also restore your device if it's running slower than before.

DFU mode is a failsafe system found on all Apple mobile devices. It allows you to restore your device if it malfunctions. Previously, jailbreak developers used this method to insert the code that enabled jailbreaking, but it no longer works with newer devices (it no longer works for jailbreaking starting with the iPhone 4s).

Note: If you want to repair your device by putting it into DFU mode and restoring with iTunes, it will update to the latest iOS. If you have an iPhone 4s or newer, there's nothing you can do to prevent this. If you have an iPhone 4 or earlier, you can restore to the same version or downgrade to an older version only if you have the SHSH blobs. Look for a tutorial on iPhoneate here to learn how to do this.

Note: If you want to exit DFU mode, all you have to do is press the Home+Sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo.

I hope this information is helpful to more than one person. If you have any questions, you can leave them in the comments, or use our help chat on the right side of the page.

The easiest way to connect your Mac is with a PlayStation 3 controller. IMPORTANT! This only works with PlayStation 3; don't ask about other controllers because they won't work. The Xbox controller is incompatible. The PlayStation controller connects via Bluetooth. Here's a video demonstration of a game on my Mac.
