Installation:
- First of all, we need to install the PocketCloud Windows Companion Software
Windows versions it works with:

Note: Very important: disable all firewalls, whether it's the Windows firewall or your antivirus, otherwise it won't connect. Afterward, you can enable port 3389 in your firewall. Read the entire post to fully understand; if you have any questions, feel free to comment.
- Now, to use the application and gain remote access, we need to open some ports through which it will connect. To do this, we'll open a browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or any other, and enter our IP address in the address bar to access our modem's main page.
- If you don't know what your IP address is, go to your PC, first, Start, then Run, a window will open and you will type "cmd", without quotes and press enter, the Command Prompt window will open and you will type "ipconfig" without quotes.
- The IP address you will use will be the one within the value that says "Default Gateway". This is the one you will put in the address bar, for example: 192.168.0.0. You will put it exactly like that without adding anything, not "www", not without that.
- Okay, as you can see in the image above, this is the main page of a modem, in my case a Motorola. It will ask you for a username and password. Where do you get this information? It's very easy. Your internet provider should have given it to you, or you can check your modem's manual. If neither of those works, search online for how to access your modem. By default, the username is "admin" and the password is a word related to the company or the serial number of your modem.
- Now, here comes the tricky part; the tricky part is finding the section that says "Port Triggers" and "Port Forwarding." That's where we'll open the ports through which the application will connect to our PC.
- First we will open port “3389” in “Port Triggers” as shown in the image below.
- We will look for something that says “Custom” or “Add new Port” or “Add Custom Service” or something similar; here it is almost the same in all modems, a window like the one above will appear asking for “Name”, there we will put “RPD”.
- It will also come with “Protocol”, there we will put “UDP” or “TCP”, preferably put “UDP”.
- Now you'll see "Port Range." This is the same on all modems. We'll put "3389" in both fields since they always come in pairs. This "3389" is the port we want to open. On some modems, it might look a little strange, usually with routers. You'll see "Port (a box for numbers) and a box to choose from several options." In these cases, you'll set the first port to "3389 as TCP" and the second port to "3389 as UDP." It looks complicated, but it's not that difficult once you're doing it.
- The next thing is “Session Chaining (Channel), this may or may not be on your modem; if you see this or something similar here, just put “TCP/UDP”.
- The next thing would be “Session interval” which will be the waiting time for the connection. What does this mean? For example, I set it to 600 seconds, which means that there will be a time of 600 seconds before the connection fails in case it cannot establish communication. Here this value is a wildcard; you can put whatever you want, although the standard value is between 300-800 seconds.
- And the last two values are almost filler; in the first one you put “TCP/UDP” if you don't see something similar put “UDP”, now the one for “multihost”, here it doesn't matter if you activate it or deactivate it, it doesn't affect anything.
- Now it's time to configure "Port Forwarding." All modems, including routers, come with pre-configured templates, which in this case would be "Template." If your modem has one, select the "UDP" or "TCP" template and simply enter the value "3389" for both ports. In "Host Name" or "IPv4," enter your PC's IP address. (If you don't know it, go to "Start," "Run," type "cmd" without quotes, and then type "ipconfig." Enter the IPv4 address, which is the IP address assigned by your DHCP provider (modem or router).
- If your modem does not have the required template, select "Custom" and enter the same information as shown in the image above. "Lan ip Address" is the IP address of your PC.
- Now you need to activate remote access on the PC. This is done by opening the Start button and going to the "My Computer" icon (in Windows XP). In Vista/Win 7, it's the "Computer" icon. Right-click on it and select "Properties." There you will see a section that says "Remote access settings." Select it and activate it. If you are going to use a user account other than your own, you must grant it permissions by selecting the "Advanced settings" button.
- If you are going to access your PC through a “VNP” (Virtual Private Network) network, you will have to enable the “ASPNET” user; this only appears if you have previously configured this type of network.
- Okay, if you read the above and are wondering what a "VNP" network is, these networks are used in corporations to connect all the PCs to each other like a large Local Area Network. Now, what's this for? It allows you to access a computer that isn't on your same network. For example, you can access your work computer from home or vice versa. All companies have their own VPN domain, so if you want to access your work computer, just ask your IT administrator for the network settings.
- If you want this type of network to access your computer from another location without needing a 3G network, you have to sign up for this service. Honestly, explaining everything in this post would be too lengthy, but the service is free and easy to activate.
- Okay, how do you configure the application? Open it and it will ask for this information. In "username" you must put the username of your PC account. The rest is in the image, put it exactly the same.
- To access a virtual machine that is VMware View you must activate the box and more values will appear, of those you only have to configure two more, which would be “Connection Server” here you will put the ip address of your virtual machine or the “FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name).
- In VMware Domain enter the domain of your virtual machine, and in “VMware Desktop” enter your machine name as well; you can find these in “VMware View Server”.
- Those who use VMware View already know what I'm talking about above; if you don't use it, skip those steps. Also, if SSL authentication is enabled in the virtual machine, you must first enable it in VMware and then in the application before connecting.
- That concludes the tutorial. Now, a few brief things about what the application offers.
